I wish they had nothing to do with each other. They do.

Today marks one year since Charlie Kirk was shot dead on a college campus in Utah. He was sitting under a tent, doing what Charlie did — taking questions, arguing his case, trying to persuade people who frequently didn’t agree with him.

Then a bullet ended the conversation. Tomorrow is September 11. Twenty-five years.

I still don’t know how that’s possible.

Nearly 3,000 people went to work, boarded airplanes, reported for duty, dropped kids at school, kissed spouses goodbye, and started an ordinary Tuesday morning.

Nineteen terrorists decided they wouldn’t get to finish it. 

Then, less than a month from now, October 7. Israel.

Families asleep in their homes. Young people at a music festival. Children. Grandparents. Entire families. Hamas came across the border and slaughtered them.

Different killers. Different places. Different circumstances. Same appetite.

Hatred eventually wants blood.

That’s the thing I can’t get away from as these three dates arrive almost on top of one another.

For 25 years, America and its allies have tried to defeat this kind of evil with armies, intelligence agencies, drones, special operators, sanctions, prisons, and an astonishing amount of money.

Some of it worked. Some of it didn’t. We’ve gotten very good at killing terrorists.

We have not figured out how to kill terrorism. There’s a difference.

And now Charlie’s death adds something uncomfortable to this month of remembrance.

Because the loner Charlie lived, the more plainly he talked about Jesus Christ.

Not Christianity as a voting bloc. Not faith as a clever way to win an argument.

Jesus. The Gospel. Sin. Repentance. Forgiveness. Salvation.

An Excerpt from #SheLOVEsHerBabies

There is something radically askew in the aftermath of the Lindsay Clancy mistrial, and it burned me from the beginning even before I could name what it was.

Then came the final stretch of testimony.

Clancy was never diagnosed with psychosis by the doctors who actually treated her before the killings. She admits she strangled her three children. Her defense doesn’t dispute that. The fight was over whether she should be held criminally responsible.

After 38 hours of deliberation across seven days, the jury couldn’t agree.

Mistrial.

Not an acquittal. Not vindication.

You wouldn’t know that from the pink people.

Hundreds of grown adults showed up outside that courthouse wearing pink — the favorite color of Cora, the 5-year-old daughter Clancy strangled — with pink bows and signs reading “Believe,” “She Needed Help,” and “Peace For Lindsay.”

Think about that. A 5-year-old girl is dead. Her mother killed her.

And somehow the little girl’s favorite color became the uniform for people rallying around the woman who did it.

What in God’s name are we doing?

The prosecution presented experts who found no evidence of psychosis in the records they reviewed. They pointed to inconsistencies in Clancy’s accounts and argued she understood right from wrong.

And I believe them.

I believe Lindsay Clancy misled people. I believe she told doctors enough to get help while withholding enough that they never understood what she was capable of doing. I believe the psychosis explanation became considerably more useful after Cora, Dawson, and Callan were dead than it apparently was to the clinicians treating her beforehand.

That’s my conclusion after watching the evidence.

El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, has some old social media posts he’d probably prefer people didn’t spend much time reading as we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11.

So naturally, people started reading them. One from 2020 compared the death toll from 9/11 to the death toll from COVID.

But the one that stopped me was written on September 11, 2021.

El-Sayed wrote that he mourned the roughly 3,000 Americans murdered that day — lives taken, as he put it, “in the name of my faith.” Then he kept going.

He said he’d spend the following day mourning roughly a million lives lost across three countries “in the name of my country.” There it is. Three thousand Americans murdered by terrorists.

Then America’s wars abroad. One mourning followed by another. I’m sorry, but those things don’t belong on the same scale.

You can oppose the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Plenty of Americans do. You can believe Washington made catastrophic decisions after September 11. You can argue that innocent people died unnecessarily because of them. Make that argument.

But that’s not what happened on September 11, 2001.

Nineteen terrorists boarded four commercial airplanes with the specific intention of murdering innocent people. They flew two into the World Trade Center. They flew another into the Pentagon. Passengers fought back on Flight 93 before it crashed in Pennsylvania.

Why is TIME magazine working so hard to convince you that young people aren't returning to church?

Gallup’s latest numbers show attendance at religious services among young men rising seven points to 40 percent — the highest level recorded since 2012–13. Attendance among young women rose three points and now stands at 39 percent.

The increase is larger among men, but the current rates are nearly identical. Roughly four in ten young men and women now say they attend religious services at least monthly.

Gallup found something else. The percentage of young men who consider religion “very important” in their lives jumped from 28 percent to 42 percent in just two years.

Those numbers are significant. They are also fascinating.

TIME seems irritated by them.

The magazine recently devoted nearly 2,000 words to throwing cold water on the possibility that something spiritually important may be happening among Gen Z. It didn’t disprove Gallup’s findings. It couldn’t. Instead, TIME gathered enough skeptical voices and competing measurements to give readers permission to ignore them.

PRRI found flatter numbers. Pew said there is no evidence that young men are “converting to Christianity in large numbers.” Other surveys measuring weekly attendance haven’t found the same increase Gallup reported among those attending monthly or more.

Fine. Put all of that in the story. But none of it disproves Gallup.

Gallup wasn’t measuring mass conversion. It measured attendance, affiliation, and the importance people place on religion. Weekly attendance is not monthly attendance. Conversion is not affiliation. Affiliation is not spiritual interest.

TIME knows the difference.

Yet the article repeatedly answers one finding with another survey measuring something else. It’s a clever way to generate doubt without ever demonstrating that the original numbers are wrong.

Dolly Parton died Tuesday in Nashville at 80.

And somehow even writing that sentence feels wrong.

Dolly was one of those people who seemed like she had simply always been here. The hair. The rhinestones. That laugh. That unmistakable Tennessee voice. The songs everybody knew whether they listened to country music or not.

But there was something else about her too.

Goodness.

Not the manufactured kind celebrities sometimes discover when a camera arrives. The real thing.

Her nephew announced her death in a video Dolly had asked him, years ago, to record for exactly this moment. Think about that. Even in planning how the world would learn she was gone, Dolly was thinking about the people who loved her and what she wanted them to hear.

That sounds like her. I’ve written a lot of columns this year about people behaving badly.

Today I don’t want to do that. Today I want to write about somebody who spent eighty years reminding us what behaving well looked like.

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born in a one-room cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains, one of twelve children in a family that didn’t have much money but had plenty of faith.

Her father famously paid the doctor who delivered her with a sack of cornmeal. That’s how poor they were.

And yet if you listened to Dolly talk about those years, bitterness was almost impossible to find. She talked about family. She talked about music. She talked about God.

The day after graduating from high school, she headed for Nashville.

She had talent. Lord knows she had ambition. And apparently, she had absolutely no intention of taking no for an answer.

Good thing. What followed was one of the great American lives.

An Excerpt from SCOTUS Overruled a Blue-State Judge Who Never Should Have Blocked This:

Of course it was a Massachusetts judge. Of course she was appointed by Barack Obama.

And of course, when President Trump signed an executive order in March requiring basic verification safeguards for mail-in voting, Judge Indira Talwani in Boston reached for the injunction pen, blocking the federal government from applying key provisions in 23 states and the District of Columbia ahead of November’s elections.

On Monday, the Supreme Court told her no.

Not on the merits. Not yet.

But the administration can move forward.

And before anybody starts hyperventilating about voter suppression, let’s look at what Trump actually ordered.

He directed Homeland Security to compile lists of adult U.S. citizens and make that information available to state election officials before federal elections. Why? So states have another tool for verifying who is actually eligible to vote.

He told the attorney general to prioritize prosecutions when officials knowingly issue federal ballots to people who aren’t eligible to receive them.

And he directed the Postal Service toward a system in which states identify the voters who are supposed to receive mail ballots before those ballots start moving through the mail.

That’s it. Read it again if you need to.

We’re talking about verifying eligibility, enforcing laws already on the books and knowing who is supposed to receive a ballot before the government puts one in the mail.

Apparently, this was alarming enough that 23 states and the District of Columbia went running to federal court before much of it even happened. Which brings us to the Supreme Court.

The majority didn’t need to settle every future constitutional question surrounding Trump’s order to expose the problem with Talwani’s injunction.

The Court basically told the states: you aren’t there yet.

An Excerpt from Iran's D-Day Has Begun

Iran has spent months threatening the world over the Strait of Hormuz. Don’t cross us. Don’t challenge us. Don’t ignore our rules. Don’t cooperate with the Americans.

Or else.

Well, the ships are moving.

That’s the part Tehran can’t explain away.

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has begun recovering despite Iran’s threats, even as the regime announces new penalties for vessels that refuse to play by its rules. Some ships are using routes Iran doesn’t recognize. Others are sailing with their transponders switched off, making the precise traffic picture difficult to measure. But the larger point is becoming harder for Tehran to hide: intimidation isn’t working the way it used to.

Iran, naturally, is handling this with all the composure you’d expect.

Mohsen Rezaei, the regime’s new security chief, warned that countries cooperating with America’s economic campaign could be treated as committing an “act of war.” Tehran is also threatening retaliation against neighboring countries and economic interests if they help Washington tighten the screws.

Threats. More threats. And then some threats about the previous threats. Here’s a thought.

Maybe they’re nervous.

Because while Tehran is busy telling everybody what terrible things it might do, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is preparing to tell the world what the United States actually will do.

Bessent calls it an “economic D-Day.” He says the administration intends to marshal America’s financial power to isolate Iran and force countries still doing business with the regime to make a choice. Keep financing Tehran, or maintain access to the world’s most important financial system.

                                                              ABOUT FINN: 

When teachers ask what their students did this summer, 8-year-old Finn from Shelby Township in Michigan might have the best story in the classroom. He’s having one last summer adventure, getting ready to pack his bags and head back to Times Square for a performance at the iconic Ellen’s Stardust Diner. He secured one of five spots to become a “Junior Starduster” for the day and sing LIVE at the iconic world-famous eatery on Tuesday, August 25. Finn was the winner of the 6-8 year old category. 

Out of over 300 submissions in less than 24 hours from kids all around the U.S. (and beyond), Finn was selected as one of 30 finalists to audition live at the diner on July 21. He performed “When I Get My Name in Lights,” from The Boy from Oz for the judging panel, which included Broadway stars Nick Barrington, Gilbert L. Bailey II, Lisa Howard, Bailey McCall and vocal and theater artist Katy Wolfe. 

Finn has been performing since before he could walk. He is an avid dancer and, though not quite two at the time, he freestyled his way through quarantine, much to the entertainment of his social media following. Finn is super sensitive, as well as empathetic, and can cry on cue. Finn is also a proud big brother to Oliver.

Originally opened in 1979 across from City Hall, Ellen’s Café first started as a local coffee and bake shop, serving Mayors, elected officials, and New Yorkers for nearly 15 years.
